Today I wanted to talk about the best drugstore brands for lipstick because as a fan of mainly premium branded lipsticks I've like to think I've still found some amazing rival drugstore brands along the way.

These are one the lipsticks I love and use just as much as my favourite Charlotte Tilbury and MAC lipsticks and are of such good quality with a much lower price tag! Read on to discover three drugstore brands that know how to do lipstick!

As the temperature dips, I find myself using lip balms daily and with a slightly excessive stash I enjoy the fact I get to use lip balms more. So today I thought I'd run through my favourite lip balms for dry lips, from under £2 to a pricey £21!

Side note/question: Do you believe using lip balms perpetuates dry lips? I'm really not sure if I believe it! I think over applying can have the opposite effect but using a lip balm as and when needed really does keep dry lips at bay for me or helps remedy them at least. What are your thoughts on this?

Patisserie_Lip_Balm

Remember I featured this little beauty in a wish list post last week? Well I decided... what is one more lip balm?! Though with a love for anything violet scented, an addiction to lip balms and a passion for a bargain this was a given purchase for me.

Patisserie De Bain the fairly new range from Rose & Co is a delightful selection of bath & body products that make for lovely gifts and treats. The scent range always lures me in to the products, with scents such as - Lemon Bon Bon, Raspberries & Roses, Strawberry Cupcake, Sugared Violet and Coconut Ice.

With Parma Violets being a childhood favourite of mine I had to go for the Sugared Violet Lip Balm in hope it would live up to that sweet perfumed scent I have loved since the age of 8. Parma Violet scented it definitely is... though with a slight soap-y/synthetic taste that thankfully doesn't last on the lips.

The lovely range of lip balms come in three of the five flavours/scents, available at ASOS for £3 each here.

Patisserie_sugared_violet_lip_balm

As for how this feels on the lips, I was pleasantly surprised with the soft petrolatum formula that smooths over the lips with ease, leaving them glossy and soft. The ingredients as you can see may not be the best but for the past week that I have been religiously using the balm I can report that is does soften and hydrate the lips.

From the swatches above you may be able to see the slightly lilac tint to the lip balm which does translate onto the lips slightly but it does all depend on how much you apply and the  natural colour of your lips.

Another cute little lip balm for my handbag.

I'm sure I will be buying Strawberry Cupcake and Lemon Bon Bon in the not so distant future!

Autumn_Lip_Care

Lip products are something I have way too many of. I'm a total lip balm hoarder and I actually have trouble using everything I have because I haven't enough storage. Well that is what I tell myself.

However I think it gives me enough knowledge to advise on lip care. So here I have selected my favourite products for autumn - from hydrating but light lip balms to tints and moisturising lipsticks.

Best_Lip_Scrubs

Prep with a Lip Scrub
If you suffer from dry lips and want to wear lipstick or a lip tint then preparation is key. There sadly aren't many lip scrubs on the UK market so here are two of the main ones. Of course you can always make your own DIY Lip Scrub - so many recipes online.

 Lush Lip Scrubs
£5.50/25g - Lush here
These little glass pots of sugar based lip scrubs come in 3 different flavours - Bubblegarm, Mint Julips and Popcorn. Pow Wow, above, was a limited edition scrub which is no longer available. With very little ingredients (castor sugar mixed with jojoba oil and flavour) these do feel quite homemade but in a nice way. Though I would say they are a little messy as the sugar does fall off the lips as you are rubbing it in. My next one to try is going to be Mint Julips, I wasn't such a fan of the Popcorn one as it does have a salty, slightly bitter taste. If you don't want to spend a lot these are great.

Sara Happy Lip Scrubs
£19.00/30g - Beauty Bay here
A lot more expensive lip scrubs here that would have to be a treat to yourself or a gift (it will last you years mind!). These now come in 7 yummy flavours - Creme Brulee, Red Velvet, Brown Sugar, Lemonade, Vanilla Bean, Peppermint and Lavander. Annoyingly these don't come in glass jars so the feel of the packaging does feel rather cheap without the box but the scrub itself is amazing. Only a little is needed to exfoliate the lips well and the consistency is spot on. It does suggest you don't lick this off but the flavours are so amazing I can't help but lick my lips to remove the remaining scrub. My favourite has to be the Red Velvet scrub... A-mazing! You can find a thorough comparison of both scrubs in a post I wrote here.

Autumn_lip_balms

Moisturise with a yummy Lip Butter
With the autumn wind you definitely need a least one lip balm in your bag and on your desk. I prefer to save thick lip balms until it gets really cold and opt for light but nourishing ones that come in nice flavours/scents.

The Body Shop Lip Butters
£4.00/10ml - TBS online here & in-store
I've been a lover of these lip butters for the longest time. They come in 7 amazing flavours, from yummy to really fruity and last a long time. The formula of this is what I truly love, just so buttery and light to wear on the lips and sorts out any dryness. Shea Butter is my favourite for colder months as it's a pleasant scent and helps my lips that little be more.

Soap & Glory Smooch Operator Lip Butter Balm
£5.00/4g - Boots
This is a fairly new addition to my vast lip balm collection. On first use I was slightly worried that it would be too sticky for my liking as under the finger in the pot it does have a sticky texture and it does feel sticky on the lips for the first minute. But I discovered this melts into the lips and the stickiness disappear. What I love about this balm is that it stays on the lips for hours though eating and drinking, really impressive. I also enjoy the coconut scent and the slight warming feeling on the lips. A new alternative to Carmex I would say!

Nivea Lip Butters
£2.25/16g - Boots, Superdrug, Tesco
The Nivea Lip Butters have been my go-to balms of 2013. Caramel Cream is wonderfully scented and feels amazing on the lips and Raspberry Rose reminds me of a lovely fruity yogurt. These are light but hydrating on the lips and not at all sticky. You will always find at least one of these in my handbag.

best_lip_tints
L-R: Black Cherry, Peach Kiss, Lovesick, 09 Neon Red, Applelicious Pink

Easy to Wear Lip Tints
Tinted lip balms and sheer lip crayons are so easy to wear and generally cheap. So my collection is pretty vast. I love lip tints in summer and would be lost without then on holiday but they are also great come colder months when you want colour on your lips but they aren't in the best condition. Lip Tints are comfortable to wear and won't cling to dry skin like a lot of lipsticks will, making them a nice choice for autumn.

For an easy to wear tint I highly recommend the Hurraw Black Cherry Tinted Lip Balm (£3.99 Big Green Smile here), it's the easiest tint to wear I've come across which I'm sure is down to it being raw and organic! The red tint is quite pigmented and it's such a good lip balm. I also really like the new Baby Lips Lip Balm (£2.99 - Boots here), not as nourishing but Peach Kiss, above, is such a nice nude shade. NYC Applelicious Balm (£2.49 - Superdrug) also offer a great range of tinted lips balms that have great pigmentation and a lovely sour apple flavour... and so cheap!

For a more lasting tint I would suggest Revlon Just Bitten Balm Stains (£7.99 - Boots here) that wear off to a stain which is really nice and also come in a ton of shades. For the novelty/cutesy factor I had to include Tony Moly Petite Bunny Gloss Bars (£3.46 - eBay here) which add a light tint to the lips and a glossy sheen, great to diffuse dry lips - and who wouldn't want to pull this out of their handbag!

moisturing_lip_products
L-R: Notting Hill Nude, Rose, Strawberry Shortcake, Apricot Sugar
Hydrating Lipsticks
When picked out lipsticks that will help with dry lips or work well with dry lips it can be hit and miss. Sometimes the formula will cling and highlight dry areas of skin or you will find the lipstick just makes your lips feel drier as the day goes on.

Revlon Lip Butters (£7.99 - Boots here) do vary in pigmentation from shade to shade (looking up swatches is a must) but the more pigmented ones really do feel like a hybrid lipstick/lip balm. Strawberry Shortcake for me is a lovely brightening pink hue that stays put and feels more like a balm on the lip. Another alternative to a tinted balm or lipstick is Lanolips Lips Ointment with Colour (£8.16 - Boots here). Above is the shade 'Rose' which is a soft pink that looks very much like a lip gloss, yet doesn't feel like one at all and is super hydrating.

As for actually lipsticks I love the Rimmel Moisture Renew range, very affordable (can be found on eBay and Fragrance Direct for only 99p) and just enough moisture to not slip straight off the lips. I also find the formula defuses the appearence of dry skin. Another range I absolutely love is Clarins Joli Rouge (£14.40 - Escentual here) which are long wearing yet moisturising. These look great on, with a dewy finish and come in some really lovely shades.

I'd love to hear how you deal with general dry lips and what lip products (lipsticks or tints) you use when your lips aren't feeling as hydrated as they should be.

Sara_Happ_Lush_Lip_Scrub

The Lip Scrub market is a pretty small one, in fact I can only name three companies that sell  little pots of lip scrub. But I personally feel there should be more as they make great lip care products and always look so lovely.

Maybe in the future they will have a bigger presence in the beauty industry but until then I thought I would compare two lip scrubs that I own and are availible in the UK.

Two yummy sounding lip scrubs here but at two very different prices (the price difference is nearly £14). So it should be interesting to see how they fare against each other!

Lush_Popcorn_Lip_Scrub

My first experience with a Lush Lip Scrub was with the festive limited edition 'Pow Wow' which was a bright green popping candy scrub with a lovely zingy taste to it. Lush now offer three Lip Scrubs - Popcorn (previously a festive limited edition), Mint Julips and Bubblegum all priced at £5.25 from Lush online and in-store..

Packaging
The Lush Lip Scrub comes in a weighty glass jar with a good screw top lid, which for the price is impressive. This definitely makes it feel worth the £5.25 price tag. However from owning a lip scrub from Lush before I do know the paper sticker on the top and label around the glass jar does get a bit worst for wear and tatty looking. But on the whole the packaging does please me!

Texture
The texture of this lip scrub is a problem for me as there is nothing to bind it together making it quite a dry sugar (with a slight bit of oil in there) consistency. This means when you try to scoop up some scrub to use on your lips you do need to almost pinch/scoop it as it doesn't stick to the finger to easily rub it on the lips. However the texture does feel fine on the lips even though it does crumble off slightly.

Taste
In my head I imagined this scrub to be some kind of yummy buttery popcorn but I will admit in reality it isn't what I expected and I do dislike the taste. The problem I have with it is the  salty and sour taste which I just wasn't expecting - I also know a few other people that dislike this scent/taste. But I'm also sure some will love it. I think me and the Bubblegum Lip Scrub would be a lot better suited! On the label it actually states you can lick the scrub off your lips which I do with my Pow Wow scrub and it's soooooo good!

Scrub Factor
The exfoliating sugar grains and sea salt in this do make for a good lip scrub and it does really prep the lips before applying a lipstick/lip product. However after exfoliating the lips they do feel like they need a lip balm so I tend to use the lip scrub after washing my face, as I'm getting ready, then apply a lip balm. Then after I have applied all of my makeup I wipe off the lip balm and apply a lipstick. I feel it does need to be slightly more moisturing but for a lip scrub it definitely works.

Sara_Happ_Vanilla_Bean_Lip_Scrub

Sara Happ's range of luxury lip scrubs came about when she realised there was a hole in the beauty industry for them, so as a lover of all lip products she created the lip scrub line with other lip products to follow and a body scrub. The Lip Scrub range comes in 6 different scents/flavours in the UK - Vanilla Bean, Brown Sugar, Cocoa, Blood Orange, Peppermint and Red Velvet, all priced at £19.00 from Beauty Bay.

Packaging
Now clearly the outside packaging is lovely - the bow, the little box... just ideal for giving as a gift. However for £19.00 the lip scrub itself is quite a cheap feeling plastic jar, which is a let down if I am totally honest. If it was a glass jar like the Lush Lip Scrub (which is a much cheaper product!) then this would be a truly luxury product all round. I do however like the labelling and the clear lid so you can see the scrub.

Texture
After trying the Lush Lip Scrub and it being quite a dry scrub I was expecting this to be a bit more 'together' being a more expensive scrub. But 'together' just isn't the word for the consistency of this... it is gooey, sugar-y and just perfect.

Taste
Describing a taste is as hard as describing a fragrance/scent so I will just say that this is the yummiest lip product - ever! It tastes exactly like vanilla and sugar... and just to explain how much I love the taste of this, it advises to wipe off the scrub once done exfoliating the lips, but I just lick it right off as I feel I can't waste it! This may be bad but I really don't care.

Scrub Factor
I would say this is a medium scrub, not too harsh feeling as you exfoliate the lips as the sugar granules feel quite a good size. Plus as  it contains two lovely oils and petrolatum it leaves the lips with a balm feel, almost like after using a luxury body scrub, which keeps the lips hydrated... something I really like about this lip scrub! My lips after using this are smooth and hydrated.

The Winner
For me it has to be the lip scrub by Sara Happ. Yes, £19.00 is steep for a lip care product however such a little amount is needed that I am certain this will last way over a year and more. However if the price is just too much (which I can understand!) there is an interesting Missha Melting Sugar Lip Scrub (£5.92 from eBay here) that does seem fairly similar. I'm sure I will be trying it out in the near future to see how it compares.

If you have tried any of the Lush Lip Scrubs I would love to know which is your favourite flavour as I'm sure I will give another one a go!

Lush_valentines_day

Whether you like Valentine's Day or not it is a nice opportunity to be pampered either by someone else or yourself. It also means girly products released for the day, such as the ones in this post. But if none of that interests you there is the reduced boxes of chocolates in Tesco the day after!

For me personally I like any 'special' day/holiday as it just breaks up the months and makes that day in the week something different. Christmas and Halloween have to be my favourite but I also enjoy Easter, Valentine's, Pancake Day and any others I am missing out.

Here are two new products from Lush just in time for Valentine's Day...

Lush_the_kiss_lip_gloss_review

Lush The Kiss Lip Gloss/Balm
£5.50 - here or in-store
A total first for Lush - a vegan friendly lip product! Now initially I thought what a small pot of lip balm for £5.50 and I still do think it could have contained a bit more than 10g of product but actually this little pot of pink goodness has impressed me more than I expected it to.

The Kiss lip gloss is described as a light balm to moisturise and protect the lips, while giving a subtle pink glossy sheen and I have to fully agree with this, which is why I think calling it a Lip Gloss is a bit misleading, this for me is a tinted lip balm all the way. It is smooth and creamy meaning it sits lightly on the lips and slightly moisturises them. The scent is definitely my favourite thing about this product and taste very sweet and as someone on the Lush website commented, like a drumstick lolly! Also is not only smells nice but tastes nice - as good as the yummy lip scrubs!

As for the tint I have to say it does make the lips slightly light pink and shimmery which some may not like, though this can easily be worn under a lip product or you can use less and work it into the lips. Really do like this product a lot and hope that Lush will be making more vegan lip balms in the future!

Lush_Tender_massage_bar

Tender is the Night Massage Bar
£4.50 - here or in-store
Another first again with this valentine's themed product - their first ever soft centred massage bar. I have always been on the fence about massage bars from Lush even though they always smell amazing. I just don't seem to relax enough to actually use one and enjoy it. However this new soft centred balm-y product is really temping me as it smells amazing and the soft centre really is a lot softer than the outer crumbly but balmy shell.

As for the scent it is girly, creamy, sweet and like a lot other Lush products it smells good enough to eat.

If you are in to pampering yourself I would highly recommended this product in place of a moisturiser or body oil for a different type of treat as it does leave the skin so soft and feels lovely on the skin as it melts. I'm also thinking this could be good rubbed into the feet at night then left to soak in with socks overnight or even on the cuticles or ends of the hair, again as an overnight treatment to wash out in the morning (though do not take my word on that, I will have to test this out and report back!). So it could be used more as a multi-balm then a massage bar if you wanted to use it in little chunks to make it last.

lush_valentines_day_gift_ideas

Lush also have some gift sets available for Valentine's day.... but if you are a man reading this with a girlfriend or wife then I would strongly suggest you impress her even more by bypassing the gift sets and making up your own little hamper of products. A few lovely products include... It Started With A Kiss Lip Tint £5.50/here, Sweetie Pie Shower Jelly £3.10/here and the lovely Cupcake Fresh Face Mask £5.95/here. For extra brownie points you could wrap it up in one of Lush's wrap scarves... or even go next door and get one from Primark! Or impress her even more and include a few extras such as a DVD or even her favourite magazine (just make sure she hasn't read it already!).

If you are a lover of Lush products please let me know what your favourite newer product from Lush is, as they have been releasing so many new products at the moment!

Lip_balms

I mention the odd lip balm every now and again here on Makeup Savvy but it's been quite a long time since I wrote a post just on lip balms.

I'm still addicted  as ever to lip balms with multiple choices by my bed, in each room of my home and in every handbag. So I thought I would let you know which lip balms I have been most enjoying in the past few months when lip balm has been most definitely needed!

Lip balm for me is an essential product. My lips don't get overly dry, even in winter, which may be down to using lip balms but I do love the way a lip balm makes the lips feels. I also love different flavours of lip balms from vanilla ones that taste a bit like cake to ones that taste like like sour sweets or juicy cherries... which you may notice in my reviews below as I like to associate the flavour of a lip balm to a specific food!

Here are my current four favourite lip balms...

lip_balm_storage

Jason Lips Bee Healthier Lip Balm
eBay - £3.49 free p&p here
I received this is my January 2013 Glossybox (contents of the box here) and I am so glad it was in there as it wouldn't have been a product I would have tried otherwise. This pretty much look likes a boring lip balm but this glides on the lips and makes them feel lovely. But what has got me so hooked is the flavour, it actually is After Eight mints but in lip balm form! As it is minty is just slightly tingles the lips but really it probably the least tingly mint lip balm I have tried, so there is no need to be put off by that. I know already this is a lip balm that I will have to re-purchase as I will use it all up in no time.

Nivea Lip Butters in Raspberry Rose & Caramel Cream
Superdrug - £1.49 Caramel Cream (free p&p until Feb 14th) here
Also available in Boots, Asda etc
My favourite lip balms/butters on the high street here! These are just amazing. Forget Vaseline, Palmers, Blistex. Nivea are totally on the money with these lip butters. They are thick and buttery and apply so well to the lips keeping them moisturised without feeling heavy with product or sticky. There are four different flavours but Raspberry Rose and Caramel Cream as just amazing. Raspberry Rose reminds me of a yummy raspberry yoghurt and Caramel Cream is like buttery popcorn... so nice! I really cannot rate these more highly.

Balmi SPF 15 Strawberry Lip Balm
Boots - £4.99 here
Balmi lip balms launched late last year and since then I have managed to try nearly all of the flavours in the range. I have just finished using up the Balmi Coconut lip balm which I loved and actually took on holiday with me and cannot explain how handy it was on the beach. Yes, it did get sand around it, so made a crunchy noise as I closed it but no sandy fingers going into a lip balm or getting on my lips which was great. Also the flavour was perfect for warm weather. I am now onto using the strawberry lip balm and really liking it. The flavour is a little more synthetic than the coconut one but I really actually like that and I am a bit addicted to how it feels to apply it. If you have been wanting to try out the EOS lip balms then this range is a great accessible option.

What lip balms do you like to use?

hydrating_skincare

The snow may have gone but the cold weather is still upon us and will be for some time yet. So I thought I would share with you my selection of super-duper hydrating products.

These are all truly moisturising products that have stood out from all the rest and really do tackle all different problems that can be caused by cold weather. Without realising it, all the products I have selected are made from either good ingredients or are organic, so my biggest tip when looking for nourishing products is to go for the best/simplest ingredients or go organic!

1

Oils for the hair, face, body and nails...

In the past few years oils have really become a lot more popular. Body oils have become more sophisticated and less greasy, hair oils have become the 'it' product to try and facial oils were finally seen to be beneficial for all skin types thanks to Clarins Face Treatment Oil.

For the body
Garnier Ultimate Beauty Oil 150ml
(Feel Unique - £6.80 here)
This is the perfect remedy for dry, flaky skin. It is quite deceiving as it appears to be a light/thin oil in the bottle however this couldn't be more hydrating if it tried! The light non-greasy oil can be quickly spritzed all over the body (I love using this after a shower) and doesn't leave a heavy or sticky feeling to the skin but nourishes it much like a body butter or thick moisturiser would. If you have dry, flaky skin caused by winter then this is a must!

On the face
Botanics 100% Organic Facial Oil 25ml
(Boots - £9.99 here) *On sale for £4.99 at time of post*
Facial oils are great for dry skin and this is a great budget friendly one. Now I personally have oily/combination skin so this is way too hydrating for my own skin but I use this on my neck in upwards motions and also the smallest amount on my forehead where I have dry skin (I do this once a week as it is so hydrating). I would highly recommend this as a night treatment for dry or more mature skin as it just feels so nourishing and relaxing to massage it into the skin before bed and the scent is also quite sleep inducing.

For nails & cuticles
Champneys Cuticle Softening Nail Oil 10ml
  (Boots - £8.50 here)
Any type of oil is going to be good for the cuticles especially it you apply it often (I always apply mine before bed) however some oils can be quite thin. I especially like the Champneys cuticle oil for the pepit/dropper but also it is just the right thickness of oil. Tip: With all cuticle oils you can add a few drops to warm water and soak your hands to really soften and hydrate the cuticles, nails and hands.

For dry hair
Moroccan Oil 25ml
(HQ Hair - £12.85 here)
In winter hair can become dull and dehydrated and even after using conditioner it can look rubbish once it has dried. So you want someone that will really hydrate the hair whilst it is drying so it will seal in the moisture... which is what Moroccan Oil does! Moroccan Oil isn't an award winning oil for nothing, this is some seriously good stuff for the hair. Whether you suffer from brittle/dry hair, split ends or even fizz, just a tiny bit of this oil on towel dried hair will have it looking sleek and shiny in no time. Really a wonder product that totally tranforms the look of your hair!

2

Creams for dry skin, hands and lips...

For dry, chapped lips
 Bepanthen Ointment 30g
(Boots - £2.50 here)
Yes, this is nappy cream and yes, I am suggesting you apply this to the lips... but no I am not mad! This cream is without a doubt the best thing to apply to chapped or extra dry lips. Bepanthen on the skin does feel quite thick and tacky but on the lips it couldn't be more different, it is smooth and sensitive and soaks into the lips quickly leaving them so much smoother and I'm sure the ingredients speed up healing time. Also a tube of this will last you a lifetime.

On any rough skin
Weleda Skin Food 75ml
(Look Fantastic - £8.95 here)
This thick orangey-herbal goodness truly is food for the skin. This is the thickest in consistency of all the products I have mentioned in this post but this is truly one for extra dry skin, particularly thicker dry skin such as on the knees and feets. But I have also found it is an amazing anti ageing cream for on the back of the hands. I can't say my hands are showing signs of ageing just yet but this really does plump the skin out and bring life back into cold or over washed hands. You can also find a 30ml travel size for £4.95 here.

For the hands
Balance Me Super Moisturising Hand Cream 30ml
(Balance Me - £6.00 here)
When it comes to hand creams especially if you have sore, chapped hands I would always recommend an organic hand cream and they are just so much more affect and you also don't want the nasty unnecessary chemicals of a normal hand cream getting into any cuts or broken skin. This is quite similar to the Weleda Skin Food in that it is thick and herbal smelling and also very moisturising. This is great to use when a cuticle has ripped down the finger and is quite sore but you want to moisture it or when you have sore hands from over washing them (I actually keep this next to the sink).

Hopefully this has given you some ideas for super moisturising products. If you have your own holy grail hydrating product let me know as I always love trying out new body products!

new_models_own_moisturising_lip_balm

Today I have a lovely new product from Models Own  to share with you.

Models Own have reinvented the normal pocket lip balm by launching three fruity flavoured moisturing lip balms that come in vibrant rubberized packaging and contain a handy mirror.

Models_own_2013_balms

The flavours are - Peach (orange packaging), Watermelon (green packaging) and Coconut (pink packaging).

The lip balms are priced at £4.00 each and are available now on the Models Own website and from the Models Own Bottleshop. They will also be available to buy in Boots stores from June.

Models_own_lip_balms_watermelon

Here I have the juicy Watermelon Moisturising Lip Balm and my initial impression was on the dinky slim line compact - I really do like the slim size and the soft touch feel to it. As for the lip balm itself it really is packed full of flavour and isn't a synthetic watermelon smell. The texture is definitely more moisturising on the lips however I am not keen on anything sticky feeling on my lips and this does have that tacky feeling to it. But I know I am just fussy and it isn't too sticky.

I think this will be a great one for in summer especially when it hits Boots stores in June. Though I am a little sad they didn't create a cherry one in a bright red compact!
